Seven Concepts of Suzuki Philosophy
Every Child Can Learn
Though it may look different in each child, every child is born with great potential to learn. It is our task as parents and teachers to provide every child with a nurturing environment for learning.
Ability Develops Early
Babies, toddlers, and young children are absorbing information in their environment even if it is not immediately evident to those observing them. This results in early and apparently sudden developments in ability which have in fact been brewing for months or years. Adults can learn to be sensitive to young children’s development too.
Environment Nurtures Growth
It is not merely isolated experiences, but the whole learning environment which shapes the child’s development. Parents and teachers can work to create an environment which encourages exploration and discovery.
Children Learn From One Another
Children will observe and emulate the other children in their environment. Mixed-age classes can motivate the younger children’s development and encourage the older children to take on leadership roles.
Success Breeds Success
Every small achievement a child attains forms a foundation for future achievements and builds self-confidence.
Parental Involvement is Critical
Parents are their children’s first and most influential teachers. Children spend relatively little time in organized classes, so the concepts explored in class must be brought home.
Encouragement is Essential
Children are never forced to participate in class activities when they are not yet comfortable. The choice to participate to the best of the child’s ability is instead reinforced through positive encouragement. Observation can be just as valuable as direct participation.
